Welcome to Front Porch Carver
If you’ve ever wanted to try wood carving but didn’t know where to start, you’re in the right place.
I’m not an artist. I’m not a master carver. I’m just someone who’s been interested in carving for a long time and finally decided to pick up a knife and give it a try. This blog is about what I’ve learned along the way — the good cuts, the bad cuts, and everything in between.
How I Got Started
Like a lot of folks, I didn’t start with fancy tools or a plan. I grabbed a tree branch and an old Dremel I had in the garage and started messing around. I watched a few videos on YouTube, made plenty of mistakes, and slowly realized something important:
You don’t have to be an expert to start carving.
You just have to start.
Over time I picked up a couple of simple hand tools, learned what worked for me, and figured out what I wished someone had explained from the beginning.
Why This Blog Exists
Front Porch Carver is for beginners.
It’s for people who:
Like working with their hands Don’t want to spend a fortune on tools Are okay learning one small step at a time
I’ll be sharing:
Simple carving projects Basic tool information What tools I actually use Mistakes I’ve made (so you don’t have to)
Nothing fancy. Nothing complicated. Just honest carving.
What You Can Expect Here
Most of what I carve is small and simple — mushrooms, little figures, and practice pieces. I like projects that can be finished without rushing and enjoyed when they’re done.
If you’re looking for:
Step-by-step beginner projects Straightforward advice A relaxed pace
You’ll feel right at home here.
One Cut at a Time
Wood carving isn’t about perfection. It’s about slowing down, paying attention, and enjoying the process. Every piece teaches you something, even when it doesn’t turn out the way you hoped.
That’s how I’m approaching this blog — one post at a time, one cut at a time.
Thanks for stopping by.
I’m glad you’re here.
